Intent.
At Hoole St Michael School, we strive to produce a broad and enriching History curriculum that allows the children to become confident, curious learners who have deep and secure knowledge of the past, relating not only to Great Britain, but to the wider world. We encourage children to ask questions about the past and to make links between what has already happened and what is currently happening within society. Our aim is to ensure that when our children leave us, they are broad minded, good citizens. We aim for them to develop perspective and make accurate judgements on societal development.
We want to ensure they have a solid understanding of the past, so that they can positively impact upon the future.
Implementation.
All staff use the National Curriculum Programme of Study to ensure that lessons and units are progressive and to ensure thorough coverage across each year group and Key Stage. As a school, we teach a creative curriculum that enables us to make links between subjects, therefore making learning more enriching and meaningful for our children. Every History lesson begins with us placing our learning on a time line. This helps the children to understand where this learning fits in to our past. The children are also given the opportunity to work ‘hands on’ with artefacts and meaningful resources where possible. We will also use books and ICT as a tool to find information and answer questions. Children will record their learning in creative ways; displaying their understanding through drama, group discussions, collaborative work, outdoor learning and art. We plan class trips and have visitors in to school in order to deepen our enquiry and understanding of certain topics.
Impact.
As a result of carefully planned and sequenced lessons that build upon prior knowledge, children become inquisitive, curious and interested historians. Children have a secure understanding of chronology and understand where events fit in to our past. Children leave school equipped with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions within their later lives and understand how learning about the past can influence our futures.
Whole school History overviews
World War 2 Week.
How lucky are we to have our own air-raid shelter in our school grounds!? We have loved out week of remembering the amazing courage and strength of the soldiers who fought during the war. We reflected on how this awful, brutal war had moments of peace and trust (our Christian Values for this half term).
Black History Month. October 2022.
This month we recognised, celebrated and championed the work done by wonderful people from the past, such as Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. We talked about the importance of a diverse world, filled with people who use their talents to do good.
World War 1 Week. November 2021.
World War II Week. Week beginning 9th November 2020.
At Hoole St Michael, this week we once again remembered the wonderful soldiers who fought for our freedom during World War II. The children thoroughly enjoyed creative, practical and enriching learning opportunities across the school.
Even though we were unable to have visitors into school, we arranged for the children to meet a lady from the Women’s Land Army via zoom, who told us all about her special job and what life was like for her. During the week each class were also given an evacuee suitcase filled with items that they would have taken with them whilst being evacuated.
We had a wonderful week!
World War 1 Week. Week beginning 11th November 2019.
This week we have been learning about World War 1. We have taken part in many wonderful activities and had fabulous learning opportunities.
In EYFS and KS1 we have been looking at the trenches. We made our own trenches and imagined what life was like living in such horrendous conditions. We then wrote letters home to our families from the trenches, telling them about our day.
In KS2 we have had a visitor called Leigh from ‘Historic Workshops’. We signed up to the British Army, went to ‘officer candidate school’, learnt about soldier life, heard stories from the front line and even encountered real artefacts from the war.
The children have got so much out these amazing experiences and have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Great War and the many heroic soldiers who fought for us.
We will remember.
